.com, .ai, or .si: choosing the right extension

Compare the meaning and practical tradeoffs of .com, .ai, and .si when choosing a domain for a new brand or product.

The extension is part of the name

The same word can feel different across extensions. Consider how customers will interpret the complete address, how they will type it after hearing it, and whether the extension fits your geographical audience. Treat extension choice as part of your positioning and operating costs, not as a shortcut to search traffic.

.com: a generic extension

IANA classifies .com as a generic top-level domain. It does not identify one country. That makes it an option to consider for a business serving several markets or one that wants to keep its positioning broad. Compare the actual available names, rather than assuming every .com is a better brand than every alternative.

.ai: a country code used in AI positioning

IANA identifies .ai as the country-code domain of Anguilla. The letters can also make an AI-related product's positioning explicit. A name such as CodingHelp.ai signals a different expectation from an extension without those initials. Google currently treats .ai as generic for geographical targeting, but that does not guarantee rankings or make the product an AI product simply because it uses the extension.

.si: Slovenia's country-code domain

IANA identifies .si as Slovenia's country-code domain, managed by ARNES. It can suit a Slovenian audience or a brand that deliberately chooses those letters. Google's documentation explains that country-code extensions can signal a country focus, and .si is not on its current list of country codes treated as generic. For an international SEO strategy, account for that distinction before choosing .si solely because a shorter name is available.

Compare the operating details

Ask your chosen registrar about registration eligibility, renewal prices, transfer procedures, and any minimum term for the exact extension. Check whether your preferred registrar supports it. Test the full name with your audience and budget for ongoing registration separately from the acquisition price. Policies and prices can change, so confirm them when you are ready to buy.
